“Deeply personal and explicit, the ads signaled a new tone in Democrats’ messaging on abortion rights, one that confronts head-on the consequences of strict anti-abortion laws.”
And yes, Virginia Republicans screamed and moaned “Our abortion ban is not REALLY a ban you’re hurting our feelings!” and people saw through that and voted in Democrats and they won and Republicans didn’t unveil the secret invincible laser weapon that so many Democrats seem to think they have.
I’ve always hated Dems mealy mouth message. This isn’t the time or place for oatmeal. This isn’t the time for taking a high road w/messages.
We may have nuanced thoughts & discussion at the dinner table, but we don’t read nuanced messages highlighting the complexities.
What we know is we are being violated by one party and it’s wrecking havoc and they aren’t stopping here. The ten second message must be directed towards feelings, not brains. Our brains get it. Our feelings move us to the polls.
A simple start would be to ALWAYS refer to them as ‘REPUBLICAN abortion bans’, amirite? Why waste even one opportunity by using the generic term ‘abortion bans’ - ever?
Why do we keep referring to them as Republicans? They are Reactionaries plain and simple. They do not believe in the republic. They do not believe in democracy. They are actively trying to destroy democracy.
My view is, this is aimed at women who are Republican/Conservative/religious/on the fence. Abortion is a right but its is also a loaded issue for many people. Women understand the need for sensitivity and nuance in political messaging especially on an issue of such crucial importance to women. It isn't only abortion. It is about Women's Rights, abortion being the handiest handle for Republicans to grab. Your criticism rings hollow because you take so much glee in pointing out what you consider to be a Democrat's mistake and MSNBC's "smugness." You betray your actual opinion. Hanging it on the VP and implying she's somehow either incompetent or up to something nefarious is another tell. With friends like this, who needs enemies?
I don't think I said it has. I said some people who have not supported it in the past are likelier to consider doing so if they are approached less bombastically, which was the idea of the (probably young) writer to whose comment I responded. Women have been vocal, gentle, perceptive, caring, encouraging, angry, educative, empathic, demanding, outraged, not surprised/surprised by the perfidy of the Court, aggressive in defending women who seek and medical professionals who provide the full spectrum of reproductive health care, relentless in advertising and explaining the message, have shown up in person in the millions to demonstrate for women's reproductive rights as ESSENTIAL to women's human rights. You conflate what women have had to do to educate the public in general as to the importance of women's reproductive health care rights, with the very male idea that all women are alike, if one yells all should yell, if one fails then it's because she wasn't aggressive enough. I sill share that I am 76, remember my grandmother telling me about getting her right to VOTE. I showed up to demonstrations for pro-abortion laws. I am a mother and grandmother. I earned an MSW, the first female in my family to do so, and worked with all kinds of people with all kinds of problems and am now retired, but not from advocating for my granddaughters and grandsons to live in a more just, democracy under the rule of Law. I have seen and felt what blowing things up really does; and I have seen what quiet, respectful conversation and education can do to open people's minds and to help them articulate what they do and do not think about difficult subjects. Blowing things up produces resentment, polarization. Surely by now, any adult can agree with that statement as a generally true one. What we women have made clear is, WE WILL NOT GO BACK. And we will not sit idly by while some try to take away the human rights of others. Those are promises to ourselves, our children and grandchildren and all women everywhere. We are not chattel. If WE decide to be loud, we will be loud. If we decide it calls for nuance and sensitivity, we will be nuanced and sensitive. You speak from a position of looking down at us, deriding our decisions in our fight for human rights. When you speak to us as fellow human beings, and help us, then you will have shown you see all rights are human rights, and this is your fight too. Because what can be done to one, can be done to any.
I think OW is just saying ‘appeal to the emotional gut once in a while - for crying out loud?!’ - like Rs do (I think of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the traditional swordsman comes out with his perfectly choreographed moves - and Indy just blows him away in one 💥boom) While I get that now may not be the time for overthinking, I also appreciate YOUR take. Especially around a sensitive topic that ppl are used to ‘handling gingerly’... Thanks for being thoughtful & articulate as well...
Rs appeal to emotional centers and DISREGARD NUANCE. They are getting away with it day after day. Tired of bringing an outdated rule book to a gunfight - THAT’S ALL. You put into words something I hadn’t heard before - thanks. No offense meant.
"omg KAL"? No, it isn't that it is somehow a "delicate" topic. It is that the point is to bring people along who may not have voiced support before this draconian loss of human right. I know what OW is saying. I disagree with it, not that I don't understand it. Did I ask for a translation somehow without realizing it? This is a perfect example of the nuance of appealing to people whose views might be the same but who have not yet joined the cause. They may be mortified that choice has been taken away in all situations including the wellbeing of the pregnant person. Do you actually believe "for crying out loud" is going to open a discussion, make a path for someone to realize women's ENTIRE RIGHTS AS ADULT HUMAN BEINGS is at risk? Who may realize if abortion can be summarily banned, so can our right to vote? You are patronizing me, and the issue too. You don't "just blow away" when you don't get what you want. You might have to strategize, consider the ideas, situations and the possibilities of the other person. You might need to be RESPECTFUL AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND THEIR POSITION, OPINION, PROBLEMS. You might need to treat them by meeting them where they are without overwhelming them with your need for their vote. Thanking me "for being thoughtful & articulate "is bizarre. Thank you for clarifying that you think it best to go in with swords, to "just blow(s) him away in one boom." How old ARE you? Eleven? Twelve?
Keep it simple. Great advice.

Thank you for the advice. I need it.

They just need to pay attention to the pro-choice folks at their rallies.
We have the same problem in Canada, politicians don't like to keep it simple for voters.

Except the abortion issue has won not because of subtlety and women have led the way in making this clear.
