Thank you, Oliver. Your essay here expresses my own thoughts. We are in deep, deep trouble in this nation. The rule of law only applies to the “little people.” musk, trump, & their sycophants have free rein to rape, pillage, & plunder.

I am infuriated with the democratic party (with a few exceptions. I want to see handcuffs on musk & his little band of obedient hackers. That means doing more than talking.

The American people put us in this position on 11.5.2024. even if Biden was able to enact the most powerful socialist agenda via legislation (he did in fact get transformative legislation thru narrow majoritys in Congress especially the Senate) it wouldn't have mattered. The author spends much of his time chiding Dems for failures in messaging & their inability to DO SOMETHING when it's the American people who tied the hands of the Democrats by putting trump back in the WH & the GOP(THO VERY SLIM IN THE HOUSE) in charge of both houses. It's they who control the agenda & the committees. If Kamala Harris had won in Nov, even if she faced a GOP controlled house and Senate, Elon musk would be nowhere near having everyone's social security number and social security information as well as everyone's financial information. That alone would be worth her winning. Politicians including Democrats aren't perfect but they are absolutely head n shoulders a better option ..

But I am hopeful too! To break the decades of tea party dominion gop maga hold on this country, it would take something extreme. Maybe ppl will have to be purple bc such a mess to clean up. And the billionaires didn’t think this through bc their wealth is reliant on spending power. Ever hear of an alcoholic gettin sober BEFORE rock bottom?

Well said! I read parts of Project 2025. What was the most frightening to me wasn’t the banning divorce, interracial marriage or limiting education for females, I expected that! What left me frozen was the way they would be dismantling everything-it COULD WORK,

Passionate take, but if we want real change, we need more than just outrage we need smart strategy. Blocking everything Musk and Trump do out of spite feels good, but real progress comes from strong resistance, legal action, and coalition-building. Also, blaming everything on Musk oversimplifies the problem. The real issue is the system that lets billionaires hold so much power in the first place.

Agree 100%. FYI many of your fellow Substack writers are putting pressure on Democratic electeds--check out Charlotte Clymer's latest to read her frustrations, which echo yours and all of ours at this point.

With several of your lines — I may need to quote you on a t-shirt to wear to every protest that comes along.

I’m reading your post from early February, right now, the day after the national “Hands Off” rallies around the country and earlier this week Cory Booker’s 25 hour filibuster ….

Neither of these have fixed a thing, yet they give me hope, that I’m not alone, and that the idea of America doesn’t just exist, it still lives and beats strong in the hearts, and minds, and will of millions and millions of us who understand — ANYONE can sing, “I, too, am America.”
