Fucking terrifying is what it is. We already have a vice president, when and if it’s necessary, for every president. There’s no need for this behavior. Biden has a wonderful administration and yes, the legislative successes have been better than expected.
There’s no oh who will step in bs. There’s Biden’s vice president, the only one who has the hundreds of millions, the field offices, etc etc etc.
And yeah it’s Biden’s competent and stable administration, or there’s dictatorship, those are the two choices. And trump is fun! Dictatorship apparently is fun. I’ve cancelled my subscriptions. It’s malpractice, period.
Terrifying indeed. I too have cancelled the NY Times. Their Trump enabling myopia, ego-filled, hysterical, Chicken Little, anti-Biden front page speaks for itself.
Needless melodrama and pile ons now the engines of clickbait revenue is inviting barbarically dangerous political elements to rise and endure.
No “journalistic” organization powered that way should be trusted, no matter how venerated they are due to history.
Terrific Oliver, but sadly the MSM will just ignore people such as you and continue their complicity. They might soon find out though how badly it will end for the “free press”
I’ve been thinking lately that most of what we call politics in the news is really gossip. Don’t get me wrong, I love gossip. But it’s important to understand the difference. Everything Maggie Haberman does is gossip.
Does the NYT ever contemplate NYT v Sullivan, which trump wants to overturn? Are they happy with the idea that once this "court" agrees with trump, he'll deluge them with lawsuits over defamation if they happen to mention that his hair looked a little off? Way to spend your profits, guys. On lawyers.
Poll after poll on things like the state of the economy and other key issues (like the existence of Project 2025 or Trump's history as a sexual predator) show Americans are misinformed. The media often then throws up their hands and says there's not much they can do about it.
Then you see how when they want to they show they are more than capable of throwing their weight behind a particular story to make sure Americans are aware.
They've decided it's not worth the effort to shine a light on Trump's shortcomings. But it's definitely worth it to try and get Democrats to change their presidential candidate.
I think there are valid concerns about Biden. But the depressing part is knowing that even if the Dems change candidates, the press will not then shift to having this sort of concerted campaign to inform Americans of the dangers of Project 2025 and another Trump term.
Instead the next freakout would inevitably be on whatever issue they decide to throw at Biden's replacement.

Any newspaper earns their reputation day by day, imo, so yes, a very old paper can trash their reputation quickly, sadly. So frustrating.

Yes, and the rest of us will get screwed (without a kiss) in the process.
I’ve been thinking lately that most of what we call politics in the news is really gossip. Don’t get me wrong, I love gossip. But it’s important to understand the difference. Everything Maggie Haberman does is gossip.
Moreover, the MSM is intellectually lazy, unimaginative, and elitist.
Fantastic analysis! Thank you.
Sulzberger will get a rude awakening when Trump gets back in the White House.
But he is stupid enough to believe that won't happen.
No. Sulz is wealthy enough for it to not be a fear. He can buy Trump off. It’s the hubris of unearned respectability.
See, NYT doesn’t care about our quaint platitudes about a “free press.” They ARE the press. So says the historical record.
Except none of the grifters there now built that rep. So none of them care about protecting it, so much as riding off it.
They’re all in the game to get paid.
Agree on all points. Signed -- the former managing editor of the Atlantic who wrote a scathing, viral essay about shitty media men.
Excellent column as usual - I have been following since you the days of the Iraq invasion and often linked by Eschaton and Digby all those years ago
So little has changed

New York Times = Fox News for the intelligentsia?
