The leaked Supreme Court decision which would end Roe vs. Wade is a culmination of a decades-long dream of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. The decision, in concert with actions at the state level by the Republican Party, takes away a fundamental right for millions of American women.
The Republican Party built this and it owns it.
These radical changes were not brought on by a sudden capture of a “moderate” Republican Party by Donald Trump and his supporters. If anything, installing the Supreme Court justices who will be pivotal to the destruction of American rights was Trump’s moment of closest fusion with the “traditional” Republican establishment.
They were always like this.
The Republican position on abortion has been enshrined for years in the party’s platform. It calls for the banning of abortion and it is so radical — before Trump was even a thing — that when Mitt Romney was the party’s standard-bearer in 2012 there was no exception for rape and incest.
It is not just a ban on abortion that America is dealing with, it’s a Republican abortion ban.
This is a radical position. A November 2021 poll shows that 62% of Americans support keeping Roe vs Wade as the law of the land. Since 1988, a presidential candidate opposed to abortion rights has only received a plurality of the votes one time (2004) and since 2004 such a candidate - John McCain, Mitt Romney, Donald Trump (twice) — has lost the popular vote and their pro-choice opponents (Obama, Clinton, Biden) received a majority of the votes.
Republicans know that opposing abortion rights is unpopular, but they are dedicated to the removal of women’s rights, and thus have acted to enact bans at the state level. Multiple states led by the party have outlawed abortion, with the trigger for the law’s execution decided by killing Roe nationally.
In 2021, Texas enacted its abortion ban under a Republican administration. And in April, another group of Republicans enacted an abortion ban in Oklahoma.
These bans are not bipartisan. They are Republican.
The Supreme Court justices who are behind the coming national ban were not the justices appointed by Presidents Clinton and Obama. They are the product of both Bushes and Trump. When it comes to taking away women’s rights there is no distinction between the two supposed wings of the Republican Party, and frankly the same is true of most topics (the division is really tone, not substance).
Republican officials at all levels own the Republican abortion ban, whether they operate at the presidential level, Congress, in governorships and state houses, even local Republicans.
The denigration of women’s rights is shared by the entire Republican Party. They built this monster and they own the fallout.
The ban will lead to death. Women seeking medical care across America will be restricted because of Republican actions. They will die because of what Republicans did.
There will be cases of women violently raped who are forced to carry the pregnancy because of what Republicans did. There will be cases of young girls who are victims of incest, that because of Republican actions at the federal, state, and local levels, will lose the right to an abortion.
That all falls directly on the head of the party of Reagan, Bush, Bush, McCain, Romney, and Trump. They did this together.
It’s a Republican abortion ban.
